AmaDagio Ship Review
Editor’s Note: AmaDagio has been retired from the AmaWaterways’ fleet.
AmaDagio was launched in 2006 and would become the first of six nearly identical, highly successful river cruise vessels for AmaWaterways. She is a direct sister to the 2007-built AmaLegro, and a very near-sister to AmaCello, AmaDante, AmaLyra, and AmaDolce.
Carrying just 150 passengers in 75 staterooms, AmaDagio is 360 feet in length and features some of the most luxurious accommodations in the river cruise market.
AmaDagio Staterooms
There are six different categories of accommodation aboard AmaDagio:
- The lowest categories of stateroom are Categories D and E. They measure 170 square feet and are located on Piano Deck. They feature fixed windows and offer a sitting area, desk with Internet access and flat-panel television, and a bathroom with shower.
- Categories A,B and C are also 170 square feet, but are located on Cello and Violin decks. They feature all the amenities of the Category D and E staterooms, but with the addition of floor-to-ceiling windows that open to a French balcony. Category A staterooms offer a slightly more desirable location, being one deck higher than Category B and are located amidships.
- Topping off the accommodation choices are four Junior Suites. Located on Violin Deck, these suites are a comfortable 255 square feet and feature a full bathroom with shower and tub, a flat-panel television, mini bar, spacious wardrobe, and a full size window in addition to a complete French balcony. As with many ships, these suites can sell out quickly, so it pays to plan ahead.
AmaDagio Public Areas

Inside, AmaDagio features a host of amenities designed to sooth and entertain when you’re not admiring the passing scenery. She features a unique, 1.5 story library, a beautiful main lounge and bar, a reception area, gift shop, an aft-facing lounge, and a bow-facing seating area. The ship’s restaurant features fine cuisine influenced by local specialties and ingredients. Ample open seating is available on the Sun Deck, which also features a whirlpool and a jogging track.
River Cruisers Should Know!
- AmaDagio lacks the Single and A+ Stateroom categories found on her newer sisters.
- An elevator is available for passenger use.
- Complimentary bicycles are available onboard for guests to take ashore.

After being blown away by the fabulous service, ambience and sights on the AmaDagio Rhine Cruise a few years ago, my wife and I booked the AmaDagio mid November ’14 Provence and Spain cruise. In retrospect, we wish AMA had advised us of predicted high water levels. We might have been disappointed, but understanding. As it was, we were stranded on board at Avignon due to flooding and then missed visiting Arles being bused directly to Barcelona (wow…a bus tour at those prices).
Looking back, we suspect that AMA knew there were problems down river when we headed north from Lyon the first day. Of course, inclement weather is not AMA’s fault (or responsibility, as they made patently clear to all those passengers who were upset). Our greatest complaint is not that the weather did not co-operate, but that AMA “handled” the concerns in a brusque and condescending manner.
Other differences from our Rhine cruise to the French cruise were the latter’s lack of “outside” entertainers in the evening as well as a less than helpful cruise manager.
We went from being AMA cruising missionaries with of our acquaintances to taking every opportunity to tell the truth about this misadventure. Too bad.
On August 22, 2014, AMA just cancelled our AmaDagio 27 November 2014 Provence and Spain cruise on the Rhone River. They claim that four months in advance they can predict high water levels and unsafe conditions. One of their telephone representatives actually stated the truth: “this date/time was not popular”. So, because Ama had not sold enough passenger bookings, they cancelled the cruise — after we re-arranged our work agenda, paid and made our flights. Anybody else get screwed like this? AMA sucks..
Just completed Rhine river cruise on Amadagio. This was fifth river cruise for us and our second on AMA. Ship was great, food excellent, crew friendly and efficient. Also, the best cruise manager ever! Be sure and include the Lucerne/Zurich extensions.
Great ship!
Is there a fitness center in addition to the jog track?
Yes, a small one.
What is the 2011 and 2012 schedules for the Amadagio? Thanks.
Where does the Amadagio cruise to. I would like to know about departures and destinations.
Thank you
