Traveling solo can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but oftentimes it comes at a big cost. Solo passengers often have to pay single supplements, meaning that they usually must dole out what a couple would pay for the same stateroom. Though single supplements can run high, some companies waive these fees. Riviera, for instance, waives the single supplement on a select number of cabins on every departure. The company also hosts solo only cruises, like the Rhine & Moselle itinerary we will look at today.
On October 26th, 2022, I will be hosting solo only river cruise with Emma Cakmak from A Passport To Travel. This eight-night sailing on the Rhine and Moselle rivers is the perfect opportunity for solo travelers to avoid a single supplement. Prices start at US$3,639 per person.

I am definitely interested in solo travel opportunities, but have already done this itinerary. I do plan to look into other options. Thanks!

Hi DiAnne — how did you enjoy this particular itinerary? (Never tried a river cruise myself, but keen to — and very likely it would be a solo trip for me; can’t convince any friends / family to join so far!) –Chris

We’ve taken five river cruises so it should be obvious that we enjoy them – for several reasons. You get to see lots of quaint small towns. Except for a handful of big cities such as Vienna, you are able to get off the ship and be right in town. Guided walking tours that take you to the major sites are included and there is usually time to walk around independently afterwards. With the small number of passengers on the ships (ranging from about 100-200), when you meet someone you like, you will find them again – quite different from large ocean cruise ships.
We took a Rhine River cruise (Amsterdam to Basel, did not include the Moselle) a few years ago and enjoyed all the small towns (Koblenz and Rudesheim) and loved Cologne. And the scenery along that part of the river was beautiful.
