Michael Boyle-Ronaldson says
We went on the Rhone from Marseille to Lyon on the Emerald Libertie in June. The ship is just over a year old and from the outside looks very nice, BUT, we found even ‘A’ class cabins on the top deck [312] in comparison to their competitors cramped, especially the shower, no USB points in the cabin on such a new ship a disappointment. The whole ship was very [I’ll be polite’] minimalist with lots of glass and mirrors to try and make it look larger. Bar position made talks and events difficult in the lounge. I have never been on a River Cruise [and I’ve done most across Europe] where you were not able to have slow and fast walking groups depending on your ability, Emerald though they generally had 3 guides lumped everyone together resulting in the less able struggling and the more able getting frustrated at going so slow. [Cruise managers comment was ” Emerald have cut back on Guides and we cannot offer different walking speeds anymore”]. Food was OK, but in an area renowned for is great food a disappointment. On all river cruises I have always found that wine waiting staff at dinner have always found the sight of a half empty glass ‘Offensive to the Eye’, not on Emerald 125 measures and lack of staff to top you up. We were unable to use Bikes as it was deemed to windy to be safe. Staff we all very good and both Captains were great fun to be around especially on the Bridge, But would I go with Emerald again? NO! In comparison to Viking, AMA, UniWorld, Rivera and even Saga they don’t come up to the mark on comfort, food or included tours for the price they are charging even with early booking discount.
Of on the lower Danube in October with Viking and hopefully having a better experience.
