As European river cruising reaches peak popularity with younger travelers joining the river cruising crowd, companies are finding new ways to augment the atmosphere of sailing on a small ship with more active programs and shore excursions.
Emerald Cruises answered the call in 2016 when the company announced the launch of their EmeraldACTIVE program. Emerald has upped the ante for the 2018 sailing seasons with 17 brand new EmeraldACTIVE excursions and inclusions taking place on nine of its European itineraries.
EmeraldACTIVE excursions provide guests the option to engage in athletic pursuits such as guided bike tours and invigorating hikes on their daily shore excursions. In 2018, guests will have even more choices. A canoeing trip in Pocinho, Portugal, puts guests up close and personal with the Douro river and its tributaries on the 8-day Secrets of the Douro sailing.
Brand new biking tours through some of Europe’s cities like Vienna, Bernkastle and Hoorn allow the opportunity to get some cardio while engaging with these cities the way locals do. New hiking trips include a tour of some of the picturesque vineyard and orchards around Tournon, France and a trek to Castle Hill in Budapest. Onboard yoga classes on Portugal and France sailings will keep guests limber and relaxed throughout the sailing.
