File this under “how-the-heck-did-this-slip-past-us?” Avalon Waterways has announced that the godmother of the new Avalon Tranquility II will be Canadian singer and songwriter Jann Arden.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Arden has released 12 albums with 19 top-ten singles and is an eight-time Juno Award winner and a recipient of a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. She is perhaps best known for songs like Insensitive, Good Mother, and Could I Be Your Girl. Arden will christen Avalon Tranquility II in a ceremony in Strasbourg, France on April 2, 2015.
“We are delighted that Jann agreed to undertake this role,” said Stéphanie Bishop, managing director of Avalon Waterways for Canada. “For the first time, this christening will be an all-Canadian event with all guests on board coming from Canada including media and travel industry representatives.” The Panorama-class Tranquility II will join 14 other Avalon ships sailing the rivers of Europe and will accommodate just 128 passengers in contemporary comfort.
“I can’t tell you how whimsical and wonderful it will be to act as the godmother of the beautiful ship Tranquility II this April!” says Arden. “What an amazing adventure to partake in and such an honour for me. I look forward to meeting everyone and celebrating the christening of this glorious new vessel.”
During the ceremony, Arden will smash the traditional bottle of champagne against the ship’s hull, make a speech to christen the ship and convey her best wishes to all the crew as well as present and future passengers.
After the christening, the Avalon Tranquility II will sail itineraries through Holland, France, Germany and Switzerland.
Avalon Waterways also recently announced that sister-ship Avalon Tapestry II will be christened by literary legend Diana Gabaldon.
