Pricing for cruises, including those operated along the waterways of the world, are typically listed based on double occupancy, with an additional fee charged for those who wish to occupy a stateroom on their own. It’s a standard industry practice, but one that is being revisited by lines like AmaWaterways as it is estimated that nearly 10 percent of American adults will travel by themselves this year.
What’s more, there’s every indication that the number of solo travellers actually stands to increase further by offering special targeted deals. And that’s great news for consumers and river cruise lines alike.
“We make it a priority to keep on top of developing trends, and it’s clear that more and more solo travelers want to experience our cruises,” said Kristin Karst, AmaWaterways’ Executive Vice President and Co-Owner. “Waiving the single supplement makes it much easier for them.”

River cruises are one of the best options for the solo traveler, for a number of reasons. Intimate by design, river cruises allow guests to visit numerous places during the course of a week without the need to repeatedly pack and unpack. River cruises are also an opportunity to meet dozens of other like-minded travelers who share the same interests, making it nearly impossible for the solo traveler to not meet and socialize with new friends along the way.
“Whether you are traveling alone or with others, there is simply no better way to see the world and meet interesting people than on one of our voyages,” said Karst. “No one should have to miss out on a wonderful vacation like this.”

Six ships in AmaWaterways’ European fleet even offer dedicated single-occupancy staterooms, while those aboard other ships can be reserved on a solo basis. Next year, AmaWaterways is offering to waive the single supplement on select departures throughout 2014 aboard the following itineraries:
- Vietnam, Cambodia & The Riches of the Mekong
- Paris & Normandy
- Provence & Spain
- Tulip Time Cruise
- The Romantic Danube
- The Enchanting Rhine
- Vineyards of the Rhine & Mosel
- Christmas Time Cruise
