AmaWaterways has taken the wraps off its 2014 safari river cruise itineraries in Africa with the release of its African Safaris & Wildlife Cruise brochure. The only river cruise line to offer both river and land-based safari programs in Africa, AmaWaterways will feature four distinct land-and-cruise safari itineraries next year, up from three this year.
The line’s popular Discover Africa, Stars of South Africa, and Golden Trails of East Africa safari cruise tours all return in 2014, supplemented by an entirely new adventure dubbed Rivers & Rails of Africa.
On this new journey, guests will be able to spend two nights aboard the Rovos Rail luxury train that recalls the elegance and glamour of Victorian-era train travel. On the same itinerary, guests will be able to stay at some of Africa’s most sought-after accommodations, like the Singita Sweni Lodge and the Singita Saboara Tented Camp, both of which were ranked by Travel + Leisure magazine as being among the “Top 10 Hotels.”
“Africa is a truly magical destination, and our goal was to convey some of the ambiance of a classic African safari with this beautiful brochure,” says AmaWaterways’ Executive Vice President and Co-Owner Kristin Karst. “Our African itineraries offer our guests up-close, unhurried and unforgettable wildlife viewing opportunities, as well as unique cultural encounters and other in-depth, authentic travel experiences.”
Included in each journey is a four-night cruise aboard the intimate Zambezi Queen. Capable of carrying only 28 guests, this modern “eco-ship” features deluxe accommodations, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, and an open sun deck, making her perfect for game-viewing. After each voyage, guests will also get to experience the majesty of world-renowned Victoria Falls with a full two-day stay.
Africa is a destination that few people come away from without being completely changed. AmaWaterways looks to capitalize on that both this year and next, as the line unveils its most ambitious itinerary offerings since starting operations in Africa just last year.

Hey Aaron, good article. That sounds particularly interesting. I haven’t been to Africa before but I reckon going on a river cruise is a good way getting to know this continent. So far, I have used Viking River Cruises. I have been on a European cruise tour with my girlfriend some time ago (a Rhine river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel). Just recently we went on a Chinese river cruise from Beijing to Shanghai. VCR do a good job. I haven’t used other companies though.
