While browsing through the Uniworld Boutique River Cruises website over the weekend, we noticed something fascinating: a dedicated Visit Holland 2013 micro-site page tucked away in the “Plan Your Cruise” subsection. As we discovered, it has some great reasons why you should want to take a trip to the Netherlands this year.
Did you know that 2013 marks 400 years since work began on Amsterdam’s first iconic canals? They would eventually grow to encircle the city center. To help celebrate this momentous occasion, Amsterdam is rolling out the welcome mat with an international art exhibit that will be on display in several different canal houses.
If you’ve never been to Amsterdam before, a cruise along these legendary and storied canals is a must.
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Van Gogh Museum, which will re-open on April 25, 2013 after an extensive renovation. The Van Gogh Museum is located near Amsterdam’s famous Rijksmuseum and boasts more than 200 canvases, 500 drawings and 750 written works by the impressionist painter.
Some of the masterpieces on display at the Van Gogh Museum include:
- Van Gogh’s self-portraits
- The Sunflowers
- The Potato-eaters
- The Bedroom in Arles
The Rijksmuseum also re-opens on April 13, 2013 after renovations spanning nearly a decade that have restored every room in this magnificent building back to their original splendor. The latest technologies have also been added to the museum and its exhibits, which house nearly 10,000 individual pieces on display.
This year, Uniworld has three distinct river cruise itineraries that begin in Amsterdam:
- The 8-day Springtime Tulips & the Rhine sailing from Amsterdam to Frankfurt
- The 10-day Tulips & Windmills voyage sailing from Amsterdam to Antwerp
- And the 13-day Legendary Rhine & Moselle itinerary from Amsterdam to Basel
If you’ve never been to the Netherlands before, there’s never been a better time to visit. And if you have experienced the vibrant charms of the Dutch city of Amsterdam in the past, 2013 is shaping up to be an excellent time to return.
