Douro River Cruises

Several companies offer weeklong cruises on the River Douro. The cruises usually begin (and end) in Porto, with included hotel nights in Lisbon before the cruise begins. Tied up alongside the pier near Porto’s wine cellars today is Uniworld’s Douro Queen, which will embark mostly American and British passengers today at 4 p.m.

“This has been an amazing year for Douro river cruises,” says Cesario Santos, hotel director on Douro Queen. “It seems that people are suddenly becoming aware of northern Portugal’s beauty and tourism potential. The emphasis in the past has always been on Lisbon and the south.”

Porto

I can certainly vouch for Santos’ sentiment, and it’s clear that those departing Porto today are in for a real treat, especially with the harvest in full swing in this wine-producing region. “It is a stunning landscape,” says Santos, who comes from Porto. ” You don’t have one single spot on the river that isn’t a ‘wow.’ “

For the past five years, if you wanted to book a Uniworld river cruise, you could do it one of several ways. You could book through Uniworld, but the river cruises were also available in the brochures of Uniworld’s sister companies Trafalgar Tours and Brendan Vacations.

Not anymore.

Starting with 2010 river cruises, Uniworld will not be cross-sold by any of the other brands owned by its parent company TravCorp, with the exception of Insight Vacations.

Insight will include Uniworld’s Nile River cruise on the River Tosca in its brochure.

“Our ownership has invested a huge amount of money not only in our ships, but also in our marketing,” said Uniworld President Guy Young. “We have a very strong brand presence, and we’re preferred with a lot of the same [travel agents] that Trafalagar is preferred with. … The decision was made now that we should stand on our own two feet.”

“We don’t really need to lean on our sister companies,” he added. Young said Trafalgar, Brendan and Insight would focus on their core product, escorted tours.

Uniworld plans to continue to expand its presence in the U.S. and in other source markets.

“In 2009, during a global recession, our ownership went ahead with significant refurbishments on our existing fleet and also introduced two new luxury ships, one in Europe along the Danube and the other in Egypt along the Nile,” said Young.

To stand out from the packet, more and more river cruise companies are offering themed sailings, ranging from family-friendly itineraries to food and wine cruises.

Referred to by river cruise companies as “passion travel” or “travel with a purpose,” many say the desire to make deeper connections with one another or with the local culture while river cruising is a trend that started after Sept. 11 and one that has resurfaced during these trying economic times.
